Don’t you just love listening to famous movie theme songs? Better yet, grab the whole soundtrack. It let’s you reminisce memorable scenes from the film. On a more serious note, fans also relate to the film through these songs. “Sound of Music” from the legendary film of the same title is probably the most iconic of all themes. It’s been a motivator for young musicians of all time. In the ‘90s, rap star Coolio’s “Gangsta’s Paradise” from the high school drama Dangerous Minds (starring Michelle Pfeiffer) was a hit among students and yuppies. Here are more notable soundtracks for your auditory pleasure. Sorry, guys, we’re not including Sharon Cuneta’s ‘80s flicks in our list…

1. Moulin Rouge
The soundtrack of the Academy-award winning musical featured Christian Aguilera in a bad hair day. Kidding aside, Aguilera’s rendition of the dance song “Lady Marmalade” with other pop stars Li’l Kim, Mya and Pink was a huge success. Overall, the musical talents behind the Australian film proved cannes cannes and pop music can go together. The two-volume soundtrack features an eclectic lineup like "Nature Boy" by David Bowie, "Because We Can" by Fatboy, interesting renditions of Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” and Madonna’s “Like A Virgin.” What appealed to us most are the sweet duets between lead actors Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman. The stars actually sang classic love songs like "Your Song," "One Day I'll Fly Away" and "Come What May."

2. Batman Forever
The Grammy Award-winning theme song “Kiss From A Rose” by UK star Seal is a classic in the making. It’s got a dark tune for a love song. That’s what fans love about the song. It really matched the film Batman Forever. Another popular song from the superhero soundtrack would be U2’s "Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me," which had an oddly entertaining animated video. To make the film more pop, they included songs by Brandy, Method Man, Massive Attack and The Flaming Lips, among others.

3. The Devil Wears Prada
This compilation is very gay. Since the movie is about fashion, the soundtrack must have fabulous tracks. Who would ever disagree about Madonna’s “Vogue” being in the playlist? The movie is even popular for having good music, with songs like “Jump” by the queen of pop, Alanis Morissette’s “Crazy,” “Beautiful” by Moby and “City of Blinding Lights” by U2.

4. Jerry Maguire
Who would forget the famous lines “Show me the money!” and “You had me at hello.” Perhaps, Jerry Maguire is one of the films that have the most famous lines. In terms of music, it’s got the ultimate emotional soundtrack. We highly recommend Bruce Springsteen’s folk love song “Secret Garden” and Nirvana’s darker “Something In The Way.” Like most Cameron Crowe films, music was a vital part of this hit. Some of the interesting songs here are "Pocket Full of Rainbows" by Elvis Presley “Magic Bus” by The Who performing "Magic Bus" and Bob Dylan’s "Shelter from the Storm." It’s a grand folk fest!

5. Clueless
“Sex. Clothes. Popularity. Is there a problem here?” was its famous tagline. We say
“Whatever!” It is a ground breaking teen comedy. But we just care about its famous soundtrack. We still remember the air head classic “Supermodel” by Jill Sobule and the jock song “Rollin’ With My Homies” by Coolie. Other big hits from the selection are “The Ghost In You” by Counting Crows and “Fake Plastic Trees” by Radiohead.

6. I Am Sam
Although it’s not really a hit among Pinoys, I Am Sam’s official soundtrack is known as a successful Beatles tribute compilation in 2001. The film is about a mentally retarded father, played by Sean Penn, who fights for custody of his daughter. Feel goods covers from some of the best artists of today comprise the tribute. Sarah McLachlan performs an acoustic version of “Blackbird,” while Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder sings "You've Got to Hide Your Love Away." Other notable revivals are Mother Nature's Son" by Sheryl Crow, "Golden Slumbers" by Ben Folds and "Let It Be" by Nick Cave.

Being sexy is definitely a plus in show business.

“Heck, it’s the only thing that matters,” says one music fan.

The point is we all love to watch a luscious artist strut her stuff onstage. The sexy factor completes the whole commercial package. This is evident in the success of recording stars like Gwen Stefani, Nelly Furtado and Robin Thicke. They’ve actually crossed over from alternative to a sexier pop and RnB.

Sometimes, being a li’l dirty works too. Just take a look at today’s top group Pussycat Dolls. They started out by dancing showgirl moves in performances. Now, they’ve just finished their own talent search, Search for the Next Pussycat Doll.

For some artists though, it doesn’t quite work. The worst flop would probably be Jewel’s pop album 0304. The Texas girl is way better as folk singer. Other fans say they don’t really like Hilary Duff’s new “mature” look in the latest album Dignity. They’d love it if she gains more weight.

But many pop stars have rocked the global charts with their sultry chart-toppers. Who wouldn’t forget songs like “I’m A Slave For You” and “Toxic” by Britney Spears, “Livin’La Vida Loca” by Ricky Martin and “Stars Are Blind” by Paris Hilton? Yes, they’re not the best singers in the world. But admit it. They’re very entertaining.

1. "Que Hiciste” by Jennifer Lopez
J. Lo is on top of our sexy list. With the release of her first Spanish album Como Ama una Mujer (How A Woman Loves), the Latin sensation proved to be a pacesetter in fashion and dance music. Men just salivate over her new video “Que Hiciste” (What Have You Done) shot in the Las Vegas desert.

2. “Big Girls Don’t Cry” by Fergie
Fergie is another Hollywood item with lovely lady lumps. This Black Eyed Pea was recently voted top 10 in Maxim’s Hot 100 Women. If that’s not enough, she’s been dating one of today’s sexiest actors, Josh Duhamel (Transformers and Las Vegas).

"I have had lesbian experiences in the past. I won't say how many men I've had sex with—but I am a very sexual person,” she says in an interview with Mirror.co.uk.

3. “I’m A Flirt” by R. Kelly
Amid all the lawsuits and sexual allegations, there’s no stopping the RnB singer. R.Kelly, famous for his carnal-themed songs, recently released his eighth solo album Double Up. His latest video "I'm a Flirt (Remix)", which features rappers T.I. and T-Pain, shows a lot of steaming dancers and models. This is a current favorite among hip-hop fans.

4. “Girlfriend” by Avril Lavigne
This song is too bubble gum pop. But a lot of viewers like the Canadian star’s new fashion in the video. It shows Lavigne dancing and seducing a college guy. Not bad for the sexy vegan.

5. “Summer Love” by Justin Timberlake
He’s still bringing the sexy back. Although this song’s not as catchy as “What Goes Around Comes Around” and “Sexy Back,” JT still has the groove. The Prince of Pop and Cosmpolitan’s “Sexiest Man Alive” has recently opened his own label Tennman Records.

6. “Do You Know?” (The Ping Pong Song) by Enrique Iglesias
Of course, this song has the Enrique Iglesias trademark. It’s a very emotional song where a man begs for a woman’s love. The video obviously shows another romantic side of the sexy Latino. Iglesias is every woman’s man: gorgeous and sensitive.

Found out that Digitalism is a composed of German DJs Jens Moelle and Ismail Tuefekci. The duo has been making music together since '04.

They've remixed tracks of Daft Punk, Depeche Mode and The Cure. They released their debut album Idealism last May. "Pogo" was released as a single in the same month.

In the age of YouTube, we’re not just supposed to watch music channels and anticipate videos that interest us. Gone were the days when teenagers were glued to music stations and their oddly entertaining shows. In fact, MTV started reality shows when it aired The Real World and Road Rules in the ‘90s. There were shows for every music fanatic, from rockers to clubbers to hip-hoppers. But after recently tuning in to MTV and Myx, we realized there’s been a lack of creativity going on. And where did Channel V go? We’re still lucky to have the Internet. Sites like myspace.com, mtv.com and youtube.com let us watch music videos worth our time.

1. “Umbrella” by Rihanna featuring Jay-Z
This girl has indeed grown up. We surely love the Bajan RnB singer’s new video with rap star Jay-Z. Rihanna looks sizzling hot in “Umbrella” where she flaunts her showgirl moves. The best part is when she dances with black ballet shoes and umbrella. With the release of her third album Good Girl Gone Bad, which rocked the Billboard charts, Rihanna has definitely made her mark.

2. “Sundo”by Imago
“Sundo” should win “best video of the year,” if such award still exists in the country. After rocking the charts with the teenybopper “Taralets,” Imago proves to be on top of other bands with this emotional song. Imago’s music perfectly matches the well-photographed video shot in Pinatubo.

3. “Thnks Fr Th Mmrs” by Fall Out Boy
Monkeys rule the world in this video. But admirers of Fall Out Boy bassist Pete Wentz will drool over the band’s latest offering, “Thnks Fr The Mmrs.” You better checkout the video to find out why. Clue: shirtless.

4. “One Look” by Kjwan
Another rock band popular for their kick ass videos is Kjwan. In “One Look,” frontman Marc Abaya and the rest of the band portray as fans grinding to the song of a younger Kjwan. Seriously, the teenagers who played the role of the band fit the bill. This video showed Kjwan to be the pinaka-poging band in the land.

5. “Rehab” by Amy Winehouse
This British badass is the hottest singer in the US. Amy Winehouse awed viewers with her bohemian fashion sense, sultry voice and a song that talks about not-wanting-to-go-to-rehab. That’s not much of a role model. But we do love her big hair.

6. “Love Today” by Mika
The Lebanese sensation knows how to do business. When asked about his sexuality, he remains to have no comment. That’s how he intends to stay on top of the US market. “Love Today” shows the energetic Mika dancing to a song that reminds us of Freddie Mercury. At least we know who his idol is.

7. “Love Team” by Itchyworms
The song is a hit. No doubt about it. The best way to make its video is to cast Gerald Anderson and Kim Chiu. Of course, that’s what they did. Need we say more?

8. “Sunburn”by Sandwich
Although the video wasn’t well photographed, we like the idea of girls lining up to get a tan from the boys of Sandwich. It’s a cool story for the song “Sunburn.” And this video is still perfect for our lost rainy season. Who can still take the scorching heat?!

9. “Never Again” by Kelly Clarkson
The American Idol screams a lot in this song. But we love the schizophrenic scenes in her new video. Those broken-hearted are simply inspired by the story where Clarkson kicks her ex’s butt.

UNDER THE RADAR
Clubbing has always been alive in Metro Manila. It became popular in the ‘90s when ravers would dance to old school tunes like “Higher and Higher” and “Till I Come”. These are ‘90s dance hits that popularized trance music in the country. If you were a raver, you probably remember wearing goggle shades and elephant pants inside a dark, cold club.

Meet Bullet Martin, a 29-year-old advertising exec, who remembers every moment of his younger days as a parteeh boy. Among the popular spots Martin and his friends frequented were Kemistry in Malate, ABG's and Sambo’s along Pasay Road and Seven-Eight Orange on Makati Avenue.

“Honestly, it was what drove us every week. We always looked forward to a stress-free weekend. We made mistakes and tried a lot of nasty things in the past. But we grew up and learned our lessons. What I don’t regret are the friendships we built along the way,” he says.

24-HOUR PARTY PEOPLE
Martin and his barkada would meet at the nearby McDo before heading to the club. A few minutes after midnight, they were already sipping the famous puñeta drink, a concoction of pineapple juice and rum. Before 2 a.m., the crowd was jumping to the speeding electronica music.

After the hop-dancing years at Sambo's, the spotlight turned to dance events produced by groups like Groove Nation and Natural Born Klubbers (NBK) in the late ‘90s.

“Some call them consortiums. I just call them events. It was those days when new TV series were launched through dance consortiums. Then, event groups would bring international star DJs like Paul van Dyk and Ferry Corsten to venues like Enterprise Tower and the World Trade Center,” he shares.

Since then, electronica has become a mainstream in Manila’s party scene and so did the glowsticks.

“Late last year, we heard rumors that an underground club was to be opened. We didn’t know if it was true. It reminded me of the warehouse event in the famous American indie film Groove. It’s about time,” Martin says.

The news was indeed true. After the launch of Primero’s new events group Driven Manila, the main man decided to turn a 20-year-old, 600-sq.m. warehouse on 135 Yakal St., Makati into a party capital. Last Feb. 3, Warehouse 135 opened its doors to Manila clubbers with a new lifestyle. Fashionistas, who are not just limited to elephant pants, flaunt getups inspired by fashion from different decades. Old clubbers promote the love for dancing and the latest music from both foreign and local spinners.

“It’s got the right stuff,” he enthuses.

Apart from having a spacious dance floor, Warehouse 135’s appeal would be the fusion of modern and industrial designs. If that’s not enough, Warehouse promises to place the country in the global map by using special effects by Martin Mac and sound architecture by Eastern Acoustic Works (winner of “Best Sound System” and “Best Sound Product” at the 2006 Club World Awards). RnB, hip-hop, new school and sexy dance music are among the club’s eclectic lineup.

THE REBIRTH OF UNDERGROUND
Warehouse 135’s grand opening was not to be missed. It showed Manila’s evolution in culture, fashion, technology and music. International DJ Shunji Moriwaki represented today’s global music, while DJs Anton Ramos (famous for his Chillout Project) and Elmer Dado played for the local scene. The tickets cost P700, which is the usual price of events these days.

Another smashing event was Warehouse 135’s Chinese New Year Party, which brought back one of world’s hottest female DJs, Lisa Loud. The “first lady of dance music” rocked the night with her strong and tribal beats.

Then last summer, The Jude Lee Experiment and Erwin Edralin were the spin stars at “Driven Boracay.” Manila’s party scene moved to Bora, which happens every year. Beachfront hot spot Hey Jude was the perfect venue for Driven Manila’s summer event. It’s not just about the beach anymore. Boracay became a large sandy disco.

Last night, DJ-producer Steve Porter came to Warehouse 135 (www.drivenmanila.com) to play his famous blend of breaks, house, trance and techno. The American DJ famous for his “Porterhouse” remixes began producing music at 16. Since 1999, he has toured the globe with spin stars and has produced 50 originals and 30 remixes. David Jacob of NBK/Kee Club-Hong Kong also played tracks of today’s electronica. So who ever said the dancing’s over?

The party never stops.

Artists lose the spotlight at one point in their careers. Groups disband because their frontmen quit or they don’t sell records anymore. Solo artists, on the other hand, lose their edge and probably fail to reinvent their craft. But fans would never stop following their every step. Whether these artists are going solo, reuniting or releasing a comeback album, they’ll definitely make headlines soon. Also, there are never-ending, comeback gossips we can’t help but mention.

1. Dolores O’Riordan (formerly of The Cranberries)
The Irish rocker, famous for her high notes and hairstyles, is making a comeback as a solo artist. Fans wish the former Cranberries vocalist still has the edge after making hits like “Zombie,” “Ode to My Family” and “Linger.” Last month, O’Riordan finally released her first solo album Are You Listening? (with a brand new long black hairdo). Her first single “Ordinary Day” has that indie rock sound, which music lovers will find interesting. Its video says a lot about the Irish singer’s great fashion sense.

2. Chicane
Chicane has made songs that are iconic to clubbers. Fans now label his music as chillout. But we were disappointed when his single “Stoned in Love” (featuring the legendary Tom Jones on vocals) was released in 2006. It might have been Chicane’s attempt to duplicate the success of his biggest hit “Don’t Give Up” in 2000 (which featured Bryan Adams). Although Chicane departed from his label Universal, his fourth album Somersault is scheduled to be released on July 16. This album promises to be a hitmaker.

3. Mutya Buena (formerly of Sugababes)
Mutya Buena was probably the most popular girl from the Brit pop group Sugababes. The girl’s got unique voice and edgy look. Although she has left the band in 2005, the Fil-Brit singer has just recently released her first album Real Girl under Universal Records. The album introduces a more adventurous pop music, reminiscent of the Sugababes. Buena collaborated with Brit stars Amy Winehouse and Groove Armada in her critically acclaimed solo career.

4. Smashing Pumpkins
It was a sad day in alternative music when the Smashing Pumpkins disbanded in 2000. After the breakup, front man Billy Corgan released his solo album that critics wished would be an international success. But the world surely missed the most stylish band in the world.

In April 2006, Corgan and drummer Jimmy Chamberlin officially announced they were recording a reunion album with two new members. Scheduled to be release on July 10, their upcoming album Zeitgeist promises to bring back the unique sounds of the band. Watch out for the release of their first single “Tarantula.”

5. Shirley Manson of Garbage
Another rock icon from the ‘90s is Garbage’s femme fatale, Shirley Manson. The rust-haired girl with the punk attitude will be launching her first solo album soon. But Manson claims Garbage has not broken up. There’s no news yet if the Scottish rocker will make a crossover to pop or retain the badass image she’s been known for. Nothing’s impossible in Hollywood. Surely, fans will miss the dark tunes of Garbage hits like “Only Happy When It Rains,” “World Is Not Enough” and “Stupid Girl.”

6. Wolfgang
The local hard rock scene surely missed Wolfgang and their heavy riffs. Last Jan. 6 and 12, most of the Wolfgang members reunited at a Music Museum concert with Razorback. At long last, we’ll be hearing more of Basti Artadi and the gang with their new songs, including the first single “Deathsquad,” promoted online at Yahoo! Philippines.

7. No Doubt
Fans of the ska sensation claim Gwen Stefani did promise them a No Doubt reunion album. The question, however, is when. It’s not that they don’t like Stefani’s crossover to hippity-hoppity pop. They even hear No Doubt remains in her latest album. What fans are excited about is how each No Doubt member’s evolution will affect their music once they reunite.

8. Spice Girls

This is the biggest speculation for pop fanatics. Geri, Victoria, Mel B and Emma recently met in Los Angeles during the 32nd birthday of David Beckham, Victoria’s husband. There are rumors saying the girls will be producing a Christmas show in LA. But Mel C, who launched her latest album this year, is not a bit interested in producing a project with the group. Some fanatics say it will still be a big comeback without Sporty Spice.

1. "Home" by Daughtry
“Home” became more popular when American Idol 6 played the song whenever a finalist was booted out. As of this writing, American Idol 5 finalist Chris Daughtry and his band has climbed up to no. 5 from no. 13 last week in Billboard’s Hot 100. Daughtry is one of two AI 5 finalists (other being Katharine McPhee) who are making it big as recording artists.

2. "4 in the Morning" by Gwen Stefani
Gwen Stefani recently released her latest single, “4 in the Morning,” from her bestselling album The Sweet Escape. The song, which is currently in MTV’s Top 20, reminds us a lot of the golden days of No Doubt when they played “Don’t Speak.” It has that rock n' roll and melancholic effect. Stefani makes interesting music for the blank generation.

3. "Te Busque" by Nelly Furtado featuring Juanes
After making RnB hits like "Say It Right" and "Promiscuous," crossover success Nelly Furtado makes music inspired by her Latin roots. "Te Busque" is a heart-stomping play of hiphop and Latin music. The bilingual theme makes it livelier. South American superstar Juanes backs Furtado’s unique voice this time.

4. "Umagang Kay Ganda" by Bamboo
From Bamboo’s latest cover album We Stand Alone Together, the biggest band in the country relives the ‘80s hit of Tillie Moreno & Ray-an Fuentes. Of course, Bamboo has added their funk rock flavor into it. The song will definitely bring you back to memory lane.

5. "Earth Intruders" by Bjork
The purveyor of bizarre music is finally back with a brand new style. With the release of her latest album Volta, no. 1 in Billboard’s Digital Albums, Bjork uses a contemporary approach to indigenous instruments. Her tunes here are still out of this world, which Bjork fans would adore. For non-fans, you still have to be a patient listener. Critically-acclaimed producer Timbaland co-composed this song with the Icelandic chantress.

6. "Makes Me Wonder" by Maroon 5
Maroon 5 is once again the hottest band in America with the release of their second album. The first single “Makes Me Wonder” still has the remains of the first album but has more electronic beats. This song, currently no. 1 in Billboard’s Hot 100, defines sexy rock music.

7. "Before He Cheats" by Carrie Underwood
Carrie Underwood reintroduced country music to the Philippines. Because of the popularity of the American Idol champ, we now have Pinoy teenagers who appreciate her genre. This latest single is currently no. 8 in Billboard’s Hot 100. Girls will love definitely love the music video where Underwood smashes a guy’s car.

“I’m a nerd,” he admits.

He loves to play the role-playing game “Dungeons & Dragons.” Besides playing, he also works at an advertising firm and regularly writes for The Manila Times’ Popoli.

“Personally, I like his dedication to friends. He always keeps in touch. Professionally, he has the right comic timing. He’s a good writer and great singer,” Mo shares.

For Maui, she loves talking to Mojo about the boys.

LIFE'S A BEACH
Some of us don’t know that Maui adores the beach. She loves to dive in Anilao and surf in Zambales.

“There’s also this new spot we found in Laia, Batangas,” she enthuses.

On June 28, she’ll be back in Bali, Indonesia to celebrate her birthday.

Guys just wish they were there. But they can only fantasize her sex stories like these:

“I had sex on the Skyway at 4 a.m. with an ex-boyfriend,” she shares.

RADIO RIOT!

Our mornings are never complete without a shot of Mo, Mojo and Maui’s ménage-a-trois.

Magic 89.9’s Good Times is more than just a radio morning show from Mondays thru Thursdays. It’s become a part of our daily lives as students and workers. Call center agents end their shift with the addictive bunch of DJs Mo Twister, Mojo Jojo and Maui Taylor. And if you encounter someone in your commute, laughing as he listens to the radio phone, he’s probably tuned in.

“The controversial ‘Forbidden Questions’ asked to celebrities every Wednesday is tabloid entertainment at its best. The sarcasm and the hot arguments between DJs, guests and fans are the perfect breakfast whenever I prepare for school. It’s my morning Magic routine,” says Jessa Dy, who doesn’t turn on the radio just for music.

Same goes with her brother, Jedrick, who listens while driving to work every 6:00 a.m.

THIS RADIO'S FOR REAL
“It’s not just about music. It’s really part of our lives. The show has an element of trouble—reality on radio,” Mo Twister says.

In most cases, we fans relate to odd but true issues raised by the trio. From being game-oriented, the show’s theme has moved to humorous and social themes. Good Times probably has more talk than any FM show in town. These disc jocks can talk about the elections and political ads, sex, relationships and gay issues for 50 minutes without break.

“People follow us. They follow our debates. Everyday is an extension of what happened,” he adds.

NO MORE MAUI?

Last Wednesday, Maui Taylor told Magic 89.9 listeners and her fellow DJs that she'll be resigning from the Good Times show. Of course, Mo Twister was shocked and he didn't like the news. So, it was time for the badass jock to grill Maui in the show.

Mo said Maui was "unprofessional" and was "always late at work." It was an emotional moment. We could only feel the many calls that raged the radio station.

We're not sure though when's the Hot Babe's last day. But guys would surely want an ultimate ear candy to replace her on air.

As for the jolly jolly Mojo Jojo, Mo had something to tell him too. Mojo's got two diseases, Mo said:

"Being late at work and being gay."

Now, does that suck? You really are something, Mo Twister.
